CLUB INFORMATION

History

1969: Six employees of Scottish & Newcastle Brewery, based at Gilmore Place, first played badminton in Leith Walk. The six included Luke Halpin who was in charge of the new social sports centre being built at Fountainbridge. They named their new badminton club The Tartan Club.

In 1970/1971 the new sports centre opened and the 4 badminton courts allowed the founding members to increase their membership. They registered with the Heather Badminton League starting at the bottom of the ladder in 1973 in Division 11. At the end of the season the first team went up the ladder and every subsequent year they moved up until they won the First Division and League Cup.

The Club was popular and the numbers increased each year. One of the reasons given for the popularity was that, in those days, you could have a drink before driving home. The Club had excellent facilities above the sports hall (including a bar and dance floor) so the players got to know each other well. In the following years the Club recorded over 50 members that supported five Heather League Teams.

It was a very sad day when the Brewery sold its site for redevelopment and the Club had to find new sports facilities and a few different venues have been tried over the years since then. However the club has continued to maintain its reputation for being competitive as well as sociable and friendly.

Schedule

The club plays once a week, on Mondays from 8pm-9:45pm, at Craigroyston High Sports Hall. We play with feather shuttles. There are 4 courts in this hall.
